It is a three-year program developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to address the demands of the 21st-century workforce. The program shifts the focus from traditional teaching methods to Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), emphasizing learner-centered methodologies and developing skills and knowledge applicable to real-life situations.
Program Objectives
By the end of the course, trainees should be able to:
- Model appropriate behavior and values for pre-primary school learners
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with learners, peers, parents, and the community
- Use appropriate pedagogical approaches to facilitate learning in and out of the classroom
- Apply inclusive practices to support all pre-primary school learners, including those with disabilities and special education needs
- Employ ICT skills in the learning process to enhance digital literacy
- Employ appropriate assessment approaches to promote effective learning for pre-primary learners
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for enrollment, candidates must have a Mean Grade of C plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (KCSE) or its equivalent as equated by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). Candidates with Special Needs (SNE) will be admitted with a Mean Grade of C minus (-) in KCSE or equivalent.
Course Structure
The DECTE program consists of coursework and practicum sessions. Trainees will undertake a Micro Teaching course of three months, which is a pre-requisite for the teaching practicum of two school terms. To be awarded the Diploma, candidates must complete the required hours for coursework and pass the stipulated assessment as directed by KNEC.
